Household Expenditure Benchmarks

We produce benchmarks of household living expenses for banks and other companies making lending decisions.

The benchmarks are estimates of what a household typically spends given its pre-tax income, number of adults and number of children.

The benchmarks capture spending on the basics like electricity and food, and discretionary spending like magazines and movie tickets.

Housing costs and financial products (debt and assets) are not included in the benchmarks because they are typically the immediate subject of lending decisions.

We have been producing these benchmarks for over a decade, using models developed by our team and using Stats NZ’s Household Economic Survey of Expenditure.

The benchmarks are a subscription service run by Perpetual Roundtables. If you would like to know more or subscribe to the benchmarks, please contact Nigel McCook at Nigel.McCook@Perpetual.com.au
